The Quran explicitly prohibits the consumption of alcohol and intoxicants. This prohibition is based on the belief that intoxicants hinder clear thinking and
can lead to immoral behavior, poor judgment, and estrangement from God's guidance. Here are some references from the Quran regarding alcohol and intoxicants:- Surah Al-Baqarah (2:219): This verse acknowledges that while there may be some benefit in alcoholic beverages and gambling, the sin in them is greater
than the benefit. It states, "They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, 'In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than
their benefit.'" 2. Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:90-91): This is one of the most clear verses which calls for a total avoidance of alcohol and gambling, linking
them with abominations of Satan's handiwork, intended to sow enmity and hatred among believers and to turn them away from the remembrance of God and prayer:
- "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the
work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful." - "Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to
avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?" These verses and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
guide Muslims to avoid alcohol, considering its adverse effects on individual lives and society.
