Rising to the Challenge
*Sarah Wilkins of Tracy Creek, New York was not prepared for how the new Ultraman: Rising film would affect her. As she read the synopsis about the iconic superhero having to care for a giant baby monster, it triggered memories of her own troubled childhood. Sarah's parents had been loving but overwhelmed when she was young, often leaving her longing for more attention and guidance. The news that the film explored parenting from the perspective of both the child and parent struck a chord with Sarah. She wondered what her life may have been like if her parents had resources to help them through that difficult time. Perhaps she wouldn't have struggled so much with feelings of insecurity and isolation that carried into her adult years. Determined to break the cycle, Sarah began following the Stepping Into Action program. Through its online videos and workbooks, she gained tools for understanding her past, building self-esteem, and fostering healthier relationships. Sarah learned to be more present, both for herself and the loved ones in her life. 'I used to think my childhood struggles made me a helpless victim,' Sarah said. 'But this program showed me how to take control and be the person I wanted to be all along - a good parent, partner, and friend.' Experts praise such self-directed programs for their accessibility and individualized approach. 'The beauty is in demystifying personal growth,' said psychologist Dr. Julia Prentiss. 'These programs give people the language and strategies to make positive changes at their own pace.' However, some mental health professionals caution that online programs can't replace professional guidance entirely. 'A big risk is people avoiding personal accountability by doing it all themselves,' warned therapist Carly Lassiter. 'Having expert support is key, even if it's through scheduled check-ins.' For Sarah and many others, though, an online program was the perfect way to start their journeys of self-discovery and lasting growth. While the road is never easy, the rewards of taking that first difficult step towards a better life are immeasurable.
