Shannock Chokes on Painful Past
Elaina Marsh* of Shannock, Rhode Island was stunned when she saw the viral video of the teacher choking the student. It triggered painful memories from her own past of being bullied by a coach in middle school. The helplessness and humiliation she felt came rushing back. Her struggle with depression and anxiety worsened after the incident. Elaina knew she needed help but wasn't sure where to turn, until she stumbled upon the Stepping Into Action program online. The cognitive behavioral therapy techniques resonated with her, giving her constructive ways to manage her emotions. "I finally feel like I'm breaking free from the chains of my past," Elaina remarked. "The program has been life-changing." Some experts applaud online therapy programs for increasing access to mental health resources. "Virtual options bridge geographical gaps and allow privacy that some need," said Dr. Rachel Stern, a clinical psychologist. However, others caution against replacing in-person therapy entirely. "Online programs can't replicate the human connection that's so vital for healing from trauma," argued Dr. Marcus Powell, a counselor. "They should only supplement, not substitute, face-to-face sessions." Despite differing opinions, Elaina was grateful to have found an accessible solution after struggling for so long. While the road to recovery has its ups and downs, she feels empowered knowing support is just a click away.
