A Stadium for Healing
*Janice Reynolds adjusted her glasses as she read the article about D.C. potentially landing a new NFL stadium. The controversy hit close to home - she was from Poplar Grove, Maryland, just outside D.C. Her mind raced back to when she was a child and her father *Bob took her to RFK Stadium to watch the Washington Redskins play. Those were happier times before her parents' bitter divorce, sparked in part by her father's drinking problem. Janice felt a pang of sadness remembering how his alcohol abuse tore the family apart. Then she remembered learning about Stepping Into Action, an online program to help people affected by alcohol and substance abuse issues. Janice and her mother *Susan decided to try the program to process their trauma and find healing. 'I'm so glad we're doing this,' Susan said during one of their video sessions. 'For too long, we let the past weigh us down.' Experts praised programs like Stepping Into Action for increasing accessibility to recovery resources. However, some criticized the lack of in-person support. One therapist argued, 'Online courses can't replace human connection when dealing with deeply personal issues.' Ultimately, though, Janice and Susan found the program invaluable. While nothing could erase the past, it helped them gain perspective and move forward. As Janice reflected on the stadium debate, she realized how vital it was to address one's struggles head-on, even if the road wasn't easy.
