Infowars in Mesa Vista
Jared Wilkins* had always been close with his father growing up in the small town of Mesa Vista, California. But that all changed after the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. His father, a longtime fan of Alex Jones' Infowars show, became obsessed with the conspiracy theory that it was all a 'false flag' operation staged by gun control advocates. At first, Jared tried to reason with his father, showing him the overwhelming evidence and pleading with him to see reason. But the more he pushed back, the deeper his father fell into the rabbit hole of misinformation and hatred towards the victims' families. This triggered painful memories for Jared of being gaslit and dismissed as a child whenever he tried to share his perspective. He felt his reality was being denied all over again, reopening old wounds. Eventually, for his own mental health, Jared had to cut off contact with his father almost entirely. Years passed in this painful estrangement until Jared's wife Emily discovered the Stepping Into Action program from Hofman Hollis Counseling. The online materials provided a roadmap for acknowledging and working through the intergenerational trauma caused by Jared's father's delusions. In one of their sessions, Emily quoted the program's core principle: 'Facing our deepest fears is the only way to heal our oldest wounds.' Slowly but surely, Jared found the strength to attempt reconciliation with his father again. Expert family therapists were divided on the wisdom of this approach. Some argued that re-engaging with the source of so much pain could easily backfire and reopen deep scars. But others maintained that the only way to break the cycle was through honest dialogue and choosing to extend compassion. While their relationship would never be the same, Jared and his father were able to re-establish some common ground and basic mutual understanding, if not total agreement on the facts. 'The hardest step was deciding I couldn't change the past, but I could change how it defined my future,' Jared reflected. Though the road was difficult, Jared was grateful to have found the comprehensive online support that made the healing journey possible from anywhere. When no local options seemed viable, the virtual program became a lifeline to preserve what remained of his family.
