The Generational Gap over Gaza
Sarah Jones* was devastated when she heard the news about the latest flare-up in the Israel-Gaza conflict. As a longtime supporter of Israel, she was outraged by what she saw as unprovoked attacks by Hamas. Her daughter, Emily*, however, had a different take. Emily was deeply troubled by the civilian casualties in Gaza and felt that Israel's response was disproportionate. The news article she read highlighted the generational divide in opinion over the conflict, and she recognized herself in the younger, more critical stance towards Israel. As the tension between Sarah and Emily escalated, it became clear that their differing views on the conflict were putting a strain on their relationship. Sarah's unwavering support for Israel was rooted in her childhood experiences of anti-Semitism, while Emily's perspective was shaped by her exposure to social media and a more diverse range of perspectives. It wasn't until Sarah stumbled upon the Hofman Hollis Center for Couples and Family Therapy's 'Stepping Into Action' program that they found a way to bridge the divide. Through online counseling sessions, they learned to actively listen to each other's perspectives and find common ground in their shared desire for peace and stability in the region. 'I never realized how much my past experiences were shaping my views,' Sarah confided during one of their sessions. 'And Emily, I see now that your generation has been exposed to different narratives that have impacted your outlook.' While experts on the conflict offered differing opinions on the root causes and potential solutions, some emphasized the need for empathy and understanding on both sides. Others, however, argued that the conflict was too complex and deeply rooted to be resolved through dialogue alone. Ultimately, Sarah and Emily realized that seeking professional help was the best decision they could have made. 'It wasn't easy to find a program that could address our specific issue,' Emily reflected, 'but doing it online made it accessible, and it helped us communicate in a way we never thought possible.'
