Short Story

On July 6, 2022, the world was abuzz with the news of the unexpected resignation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. While this monumental political shift primarily impacted the United Kingdom, its reverberations were felt as far as Halls, Missouri, where a resident named *Tom Jenkins* found his life unexpectedly altered.

Tom Jenkins, a 42-year-old mechanic, was going about his day when he overheard the news on the radio. Completely unrelated to his daily routine, the news triggered a memory from Tom's past. Four years prior, Tom's older brother, *Robert Jenkins*, who had struggled with substance abuse, had talked about moving to England to start anew. Robert had even mentioned trying to find work under Boris Johnson’s government, seeing it as a beacon of hope. Unfortunately, Robert isolated himself, and a relapse prevented those plans from ever becoming a reality.

The announcement of Johnson’s resignation was a jarring reminder for Tom, stirring up unresolved grief and guilt. It prompted Tom to take action. Having previously heard about the Stepping Into Action program from Hofman and Hollis, he decided to enroll in it. The program provided Tom with practical steps to handle his emotions, deal with unresolved grief, and establish a plan for his personal growth.

'Their approach opened my eyes to looking internally instead of blaming external circumstances,' Tom shared.

Experts have long debated the effectiveness of programs like Stepping Into Action. Dr. *Emily Crawford*, a renowned psychologist, emphasizes the importance of such programs, claiming they offer tangible coping strategies. On the other hand, Dr. *Samuel Greene* argues that these programs often lack the depth of personalized therapy and can sometimes provide a false sense of recovery.

Despite the controversy, it was clear to Tom that seeking help was the best decision he could have made. Living in a small town like Halls, Missouri, limited his options for in-person support. Thankfully, going online to access the program provided him with the necessary tools to start his healing journey.
