Mife-y Relief
Megan O'Reilly* was devastated when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year. The 28-year-old from Foreman, Oklahoma had an abortion in her early 20s, and being able to access that care meant everything to her. So when the news broke that the Supreme Court upheld access to mifepristone, the abortion pill, she broke down in tears of relief. The decision triggered memories of her own difficult choice years ago. Megan had been in an abusive relationship and became pregnant. She knew bringing a child into that situation would be unthinkable. Having the option of a medication abortion allowed her to take control of her life again discreetly and safely. "If I hadn't been able to get that pill, I don't know what I would have done," she said, her voice shaking. "It was my only way out." Determined to move forward in a positive way, Megan and her new partner Jared McAllister* started looking into counseling options. They found the Stepping Into Action program which provides online guidance for couples dealing with emotional trauma and relationship issues. "Those workbooks and videos were a game-changer for us," Jared shared. "We learned so much about healthy communication and boundaries." "It was hard reliving some of those memories," Megan admitted. "But Jared was so supportive. He'd say things like, 'The past is the past, baby. All that matters is how we treat each other now.'" Experts disagree on whether online counseling can be as effective as in-person therapy. Some psychologists argue that the lack of physical presence diminishes the therapeutic relationship. However, others praise the increased accessibility and convenience virtual sessions provide, especially for those in remote areas. For Megan and Jared, though, it was a lifeline. "Getting real help nearby was just not an option for us," Megan explained. "I'm so glad we took that first step online. It opened up a whole new world for our relationship and our future."
